Microsoft Updates for November Released by ISO

The newest monthly software and security updates from Microsoft have been approved and released to the UTEP campus by the Information Security Office. There are several "Critical" Microsoft Secuirty Bulletins as well as various other updates that were released by Microsoft. After downloading these updates, you may be required to restart your computer. Please note that Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1 have not been approved for release to the campus until further testing has been completed. If you experience any unusual problems please email the Information Technology Help Desk at helpdesk@utep.edu. Additional security information may be found at admin.utep.edu/security.

Are you Unplugged? UTEP now Wireless Inside and Out!

As of October 2007, UTEP is now has wireless connectivity in 100% of the buildings identified in the original Wireless Implementation project . On the campus map displayed at http://wireless.utep.edu/ wirelss buildings are highlighted in green and yellow signifies partial wireless connectivity in a building (due to on-going construction, building upgrades, or limits because of the building’s design). Barry Hall and the energy power plants are gray because those buildings are currently unoccupied or have limited personnel interaction. The central campus outdoor areas that are WiFi include Leech Grove, Memorial Triangle, Union bldgs breezway, Engineering breezway, and the areas between Old Main, Psychology, and Quinn Hall.

As WiFi on campus continues to be improved and expanded, there are plans to establish wireless service in additional locations. Included will likely be other outdoor areas along Wiggins and Hawthorne streets, the area near the Undergraduate Learning Center and the Centennial Museum, and new buildings and other construction areas. There will also be continuous review of existing wireless buildings for "blind spots" to ensure constant and strong reception across campus. Security access and encryption will be the most important area to which efforts will be directed next, because of the expanding usage of wireless on campus (800 simultaneous users) and the additional security measures that are being required by such organizations as PCI.

UTEP's Own "MySpace"

My Space is an online service that provides UTEP students, faculty, and staff with space to save their personal files to and access from anywhere they have internet connectivity. Faculty and staff also get the added benefit of synchronizing, as well as backing up, important documents on their office computer to their My Space through a client application. Please visit Services Catalog - MySpace for information.

Printing in Computer Labs now Standardized

The process for setting up a centrally managed campus-wide computer lab printing infrastructure is now complete. As we enter the fall semester, we anticipate continued positive comments from students and lab managers regarding the lab printing project. There are a few highlights that are notable: (1) the cost of color printing was reduced from $0.50 per page to $0.35 per page; (2) students can purchase additional printing online, 24 hours per day; and (3) we will have standardized printers in all participating labs, which will assist in stabilizing and/or reducing the overall cost of printing to all participants. Additionally, we are testing internally developed software that will provide an unprecedented amount of resource information to us regarding lab utilization, and this should be made available in the October - November time frame. For more details go to the Computer Lab Printing information page.
